American Barn Specifications
Construction
Construction is carried out by our fully trained staff rather than sub-contractors.
All sections are bolted together.
Fixing to concrete base two heavy duty anchor brackets are fitted to the uprights of each 3.6m (12’) wall. These are then bolted to the base using 10mm x 65mm (1/2” x 2.1/2”) mechanical fixings.
All fixings are fully galvanised.
Multiples of 10’ & 14’ bays can be accommodated. (Price on application).
Delivery
We are pleased to offer Free Delivery within a 50 mile radius of our workshop in Netherstreet, Chippenham, Wiltshire.
Treatment.
All internal and external timber is pressure treated with Tanalith E™ wood preservative for longevity against fungal decay & insect attack. Not including boards.
Shiplap Cladding
16mm x 125mm (5/8" x 5") 5th grade Scandinavian redwood.
Framework
Ideal Range 75mm x 50mm (3” x 2”)
Elite Range 100mm x 50mm (4” x 2”)
C16/C24 graded @ 610mm (2’) centres. Please note that many other manufacturers choose the smaller dimensioned 3” x 2” CLS (Canadian Lumber Standard), which is only 2.1/2”x 1.1/2”. As wood is a natural product, thicker means stronger, and therefore your building will last longer with a thicker frame.
Galvanised Steel Partitioning 20mm x 20mm (3/4” x 3/4”) 40mm x 40mm (1.1/2” x 1.1/2”) 50mm x 50mm (2” x 2”) 70mm x 70mm (1.3/4” x 1.3/4”)
Kickboards
Ideal Range Outer Walls are 18mm (3/4”) OSB fitted to 1220mm (4’) high.
Ideal Range Wooden Partitions are 18mm (3/4”) OSB fitted to 1220mm (4’) high.
Ideal Range Galvanised Steel Partitions are 40mm ( 1,1/2”) recycled hardwood or Tanalised softwood fitted to 1200mm (4’0”) high.
Elite Range Outer Walls are 18mm ( 3/ 4”) OSB fitted to eaves height.
Elite Range Galvanised Steel Partitions are 40mm ( 1,1/2”) new Iroko hardwood fitted to 1200mm (4’0”) high.
OSB (Oriented Strand Board), manufactured to BS5669, which means they are moisture resistant. We also include noggins to prevent objects dropping behind the kickboards.
Recycled Hardwood kickboards are tounge & groove and have three bolts through the middle making them probably the strongest on the market.
Iroko hardwood is denser than oak, maple or teak which makes it quite resistant to shock and it is extremely hard wearing. As well as being used to make furniture, it is also used in heavy structural designs and for flooring.
Height
Ideal Range to the eaves is 2135mm (7’), and to the ridge 3615mm (11’10”),including Galvanised Steel Plinth.
Elite Range to the eaves is 2480mm (8’2”), and to the ridge 4100mm (13’5”)including Galvanised Steel Plinth.
Roofing
Our standard offering is black maintenance free Onduline laid on 100mm x 47mm (4” x 2”) purlings @ 610mm (2’) centres with a minimum 15 degree pitch. All three of these requirements are specified by Onduline, in preference to the smaller CLS which is only 3.1/2” x 1.1/2”.
Elite Range barns are fitted with a clear sheet of Onduline in each unit and the gangway
Felt Shingle Roofing Alternatively, you may want an attractive felt shingle roof. Add a touch of originality price on application.
Roof Overhang
Elite Range extending to 450mm (18”) on both sides.
Guttering
Fitted to both sides as standard, we use half round black guttering and include the necessary down pipes.
Doors
Ideal Range are fitted with bottom doors & are 1200mm (4’) high and 1220mm (4’) wide,with a thickness of 62mm (2 1/2”). Lined with 12mm (1/2”) OSB BS5669 moisture resistant board & fitted with an anti chew strip, kickover latch and are hung with 450mm (18”) hinges fastened with 150mm (6”) Brenton pad bolts for additional strength.
The units above come fitted with one pair of side hung double doors in the 36’ end.
Elite Range are fitted with bottom doors & are 1300mm (4’4”) high and 1220mm (4’) wide, lined with 40mm (1.1/2”) hardwood kickboards set in a galvanised steel frame, hung with hook and pin welded hinges for strength and fastened with a 150mm (6”) padbolt at the top and a kickover latch at the bottom
The units above come fitted with single 8’ sliding door in the 36’ end.
All doors extend to ground level, meaning that bedding stays in place. All ironwork is fully galvanised for protection against the elements.

Louvre Windows or Top Rear Doors
Elite Range we will fit either top stable doors to the back of your loosebox which is a superb way to increase air flow and reduce your animal’s boredom. Also included is a set of anti chew strips.
OR
We will fit louvre windows including galvanised steel bars for protection to the back of your looseboxes.

Ventilation
Ideal Range continuous ridge and eave vents.
Elite Range continuous ridge and eave vents, four wooden louvre gable vents coupled with our top rear doors or louvre windows options and the JWS Elite Range American Barn is probably the best ventilated on the market. This makes the building not only more enjoyable for your horse, but will make it last longer too.
Rainwater Skirt
Made from highly durable uPVC, our Rainwater Skirt is fitted behind the external cladding & overhangs the plinth. This helps stop any water ingress, making life more comfortable for your animals.
Damp Proof Course
The DPC is fitted to the underside of all sole (bottom timber) plates.
